about

Hi! I’m Katie. I was born and raised in Rhode Island. I studied theatre and writing at Providence College and earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Salve Regina University. I write things. Sometimes I publish them.

I am regulary and pleasantly haunted by the ghost of my mother who was a first grade teacher for 35 years. Her classroom had an old barber’s chair that she’d sit in and read to her students. She’s my Book Fairy.

A fair question. Somewhere between the invention of the iPhone and a Global pandemic, we lost the plot. Literally.

So much of our day to day lives has been targeted for optimization and efficiency that reading for pleasure has shifted from fundamental to antiquated. Instead of reading a novel, folks are using AI-generated summaries, forgetting that with reading, it is the journey as much as the destination! According to a study in 2022 by the National Endowment of the Arts, fewer than half of adults in the U.S. read a book of any type in the previous year.

I’m also trying to instill the magic of reading in my kids.
I’m also worried about AI and the dangers of “outsourcing” critical thinking skills.
I’m also ALSO addicted to my phone and technology, myself.

That’s why we’re going analog, baby! Stretch those brain muscles! Build worlds in your mind using that neato one-of-a-kind imagination! Find or rediscover the true joy in reading.

Listen, I get it. Sometimes it’s hard to leave the comfort of your couch or the shackles of your work desk (which might also be your couch) to venture to an incredible indie bookstore or library. But we’re removing that barrier by just showing up to places where you’ll already be: the coffee place, the alcohol place, in front of your dry cleaner place, that neighborhood place where you’re picking up your latest Facebook Marketplace find. ALL THE PLACES!

Just clap your hands if you believe, and Book Fairy RI will be there! But also… check out our website and socials.
